Thank you for participating in this survey to help inform an independent review of cancer prostheses equity in Australia.
In cancer care, prostheses play a crucial role in helping people living with or have lived experience of cancer maintain their quality of life, restore functionality, foster independence, and support psychological wellbeing. However, strict eligibility criteria for current state and territory funded programs and the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) limits access to prostheses for some people, particularly those requiring less common prostheses. For example, while people living with or have lived experience of breast cancer can access financial support through the External Breast Prosthesis Reimbursement Program, there is no equivalent scheme for other types of cancer-related prostheses needs.
The Department of Health and Aged Care (the Department) have engaged KPMG to conduct an independent review of cancer prostheses equity in Australia to help to inform the future provision of services for individuals requiring prostheses due to cancer. The objectives of the review include:
We would like to hear from clinicians who are involved in the delivery of prostheses services to people living with or who have a lived experience of cancer. We are interested in understanding the barriers, enablers, gaps and costs associated with accessing cancer prostheses in Australia.
For the purpose of this review, the term prosthesis refers to external prostheses only and will not refer to surgically implanted artificial body parts, such as replacement heart valves, bones or joints (e.g. hip replacement), cochlear implants, breast implants or breast reconstructions or dental implants.
